I realize that today’s post is not a yummy food recipe, but I really wanted to share this with you ♥
You see, I believe that you are what you eat, but also what you put on your body. So, occasionally I will post natural skincare recipes (which I’ve personally tested) and tips on how to stay beautiful using simple, all natural products you can easily make at home.
In today’s environment, we are exposed to toxic chemicals every minute of every day — through the food we eat, the air we breathe and the products that get in contact with our skin (lotions, perfumes and cleaning products).
The cosmetic industry goes through little to no regulation, so sadly the safest way to know what goes into your everyday make up products and beauty potions is to make them yourself. There are some really great, health conscious and environmentally responsible companies out there, but their products are not always easily accessible and affordable.
Side note: Check out the Environmental Working Group’s Skindeep online database to get some good options. Please don’t freak out when you land on their site as you will be prompted to look up the store-bought brands you are currently using to see exactly what it is you are putting on your skin, ingredient by ingredient. It’s pretty eye-opening!
Back to today’s recipe, which I am sure you will love as much as I do.
It’s finally summer in New England and boy, does it get hot up here! If you are anything like me (sunshine worshipping, nature loving gal), you are probably spending lots of time outdoors, being active! Sweating up a storm is not something you should worry about, which is why I wanted to share this with you today.
The Coconut-Mint deodorant is probably one of my most popular homemade skincare recipes and by far, the easiest one to make!
It literally consists of three simple ingredients: coconut oil, baking soda and peppermint essential oil…unless you wish to get fancy and throw in some other fun ingredients.
You can add a tablespoon of shea butter and arrowroot powder to the recipe, which will thicken the consistency of the deodorant. You can also make it using different essential oils. I find that mint is best for the summer season.
For the most part, I just mix up baking soda with some melted coconut oil, add a few drops of essential oil and voila! I’ve got a beautiful smelling, sweat-neautralizing armpit potion in less than five minutes!
And did I mention you can also use this concoction as a toothpaste?! It’s minty fresh and the baking soda does wonders for your pearly whites. It’s definitely worth a try.
- 3 Tbsp coconut oil (melted)
- 2 Tbsp baking soda
- 1 Tbsp arrowroot powder (optional)
- 5 drops peppermint essential oil
- Mix all ingredients
- Stir well with a fork
- Place in a jar and let sit in the fridge until it hardens
